School-wear words, from interlock to MOQ.

Gemilang Apparel’s glossary defines the school-wear words a buyer meets, in English, with the Malay word where one is used. The terms cover track bottom parts such as side piping (jalur tepi), fabrics such as interlock polyester, how garments are made and decorated, and ordering words such as MOQ: at Gemilang Apparel, 30–50 pieces per design.

What are the parts of a school track bottom called?

Track bottoms are Gemilang Apparel’s main line, so their parts come first. Our school track bottoms buying guide goes further on choosing them.

TB·01

Main line

Track bottoms

BM seluar trek

Track bottoms are long sports trousers in a knitted fabric with an elastic waist, worn for PE and sports days. They are also called track pants, seluar track or track bottom sekolah.

At Gemilang Gemilang Apparel’s main line, with trousers: straight or tapered, in heavy-duty interlock polyester, with deep zip pockets and a reinforced elastic waistband.

TB·04 Side pipingTB·05 WaistbandTB·06 Zip pockets

Tapered leg, single piping · drawn, not to scale

TB·02

Straight leg

BM potongan lurus

Straight leg is a cut that keeps much the same width from hip to hem. It leaves room around the leg and fits a wide range of builds: an easy choice for a whole school.

At Gemilang One of the two cuts we make our track bottoms in.

TB·03

Tapered leg

BM potongan tirus

Tapered leg is a cut that narrows from the knee towards the ankle, so the hem sits close to the foot and does not flap when pupils run.

At Gemilang The other cut we make our track bottoms in.

TB·04

Side piping

BM jalur tepi

Side piping is a narrow stripe of contrasting fabric sewn into the outer seam of each leg, usually in school or house colours. A single stripe is the classic look; a double stripe is bolder from a distance.

At Gemilang Optional on our track bottoms: none, single or double, in your school colours.

TB·05

Elastic waistband

BM pinggang getah

An elastic waistband has elastic sewn inside, so the garment stays up without a belt or buttons. A reinforced one has extra stitching to survive being pulled on and off every day.

At Gemilang Every pair of our track bottoms has a reinforced elastic waistband.

TB·06

Zip pockets

BM poket berzip

Zip pockets close with a zip, so keys, coins or a bus card stay in during sport. Deep pockets hold more and are less likely to spill when a pupil sits down.

At Gemilang Our track bottoms have deep zip pockets.

Which fabric words will you meet?

The fibre is what a garment is made of; the knit or weave is how it is made. For track bottoms in particular, read what is the best fabric for school track bottoms in Malaysia.

FB·01

Track bottom fabric

Interlock

Interlock is a double knit: two layers of knitting locked together, so both faces look the same. It is thicker, smoother and steadier than a single jersey, and its cut edges do not curl.

At Gemilang Our track bottoms are heavy-duty interlock polyester (poliester interlock tahan lasak); our house colour T-shirts come in interlock microfibre too.

Guide: the best fabric for track bottoms

FB·02

Polyester

BM poliester

Polyester is a synthetic fibre that dries fast, holds its colour and shape through repeated washing and resists creasing. It is the usual fibre for sportswear, and the one sublimation printing needs.

At Gemilang Our track bottoms are interlock polyester; our ties come in woven polyester.

Guide: the best fabric for track bottoms

FB·03

Microfibre

BM mikrofiber

Microfibre is very fine synthetic fibre, usually polyester, made into a light, soft fabric that dries quickly and moves sweat away from the skin. It is also spelt microfiber.

At Gemilang One fabric for our house colour T-shirts: 100% breathable microfibre, in eyelet or interlock.

FB·04

Combed cotton

BM cotton combed

Combed cotton is cotton whose fibres are combed before spinning to take out the short ones, which gives a smoother, softer and stronger yarn than ordinary carded cotton.

At Gemilang The cotton option for our house colour T-shirts.

FB·05

Eyelet

Eyelet is a knit with a regular pattern of tiny holes that lets air through, sometimes sold as bird’s-eye or mesh. It is a common choice for sports T-shirts worn in hot weather.

At Gemilang One of the two microfibre knits for our house colour T-shirts.

FB·06

Jacquard

Jacquard is a fabric whose pattern is woven in on the loom, not printed on top, so stripes and motifs are part of the cloth: a classic way to make a striped tie.

At Gemilang Our school ties come woven in polyester or jacquard, or printed.

How are school garments made and decorated?

Every step in this group happens in our own factory in Kajang, Selangor: the pattern, the cutting, the stitching and all three ways of putting a logo on.

MK·01

Pattern making

BM pembuatan pola

Pattern making is drafting the paper shapes that every piece of a garment is cut from, graded into one set for each size. The pattern decides how the finished garment fits.

At Gemilang Done in-house at our factory in Kajang.

MK·02

Cutting

BM pemotongan

Cutting means laying the fabric out in many layers and cutting the pieces from the pattern, so many pieces are cut at once from one lay.

At Gemilang Also done in-house at our Kajang factory.

MK·03

Reinforced seams

BM jahitan yang diperkukuh

Reinforced seams are sewn with extra or stronger stitching so they hold when the fabric is stretched, run in and washed often. They matter most at the crotch, the pockets and the waistband.

At Gemilang Our standard school range has reinforced seams for active wear, stitched in-house.

MK·04

Silkscreen printing

BM cetakan skrin

Silkscreen printing pushes ink through a fine mesh screen with a squeegee, one screen for each colour. It gives crisp, solid prints of names and logos in a few flat colours.

At Gemilang One of our three in-house logo methods.

Guide: printing your school logo

MK·05

Sublimation

BM sublimasi

Sublimation is printing where heat turns a special dye into a gas that bonds with polyester, so the design becomes part of the fabric. It allows full colour, best on white or light polyester.

At Gemilang Done in-house at our Kajang factory.

Guide: printing your school logo

MK·06

Computerised embroidery

BM sulaman komputer

Computerised embroidery is embroidery stitched by machines that follow a digitised design, so the last crest of a bulk order comes out the same as the first.

At Gemilang Done in-house; it is how crests go on our koko shirts.

Which garment, collar and cut words will you meet?

After track bottoms, this is what a school orders from us: trousers first, then house T-shirts, koko shirts and ties, with the collars and cuts they come in.

SW·01

Second main line

School trousers

BM seluar panjang

School trousers are long trousers worn as part of the everyday school uniform, usually in a set colour and a woven fabric rather than a knit.

At Gemilang Gemilang Apparel’s second main line, made to order the same way as everything else: a brief, a free mockup, then a sample.

SW·03

Koko shirt

BM baju kokurikulum

Koko is short for kokurikulum (co-curricular): the koko shirt is worn for co-curricular activities, above all by the uniformed bodies, usually in the body’s own colours with its badge.

At Gemilang Polo or mandarin collar, with crest embroidery and button plackets.

SW·04

School tie

BM tali leher sekolah

A school tie is part of the formal school uniform. A clip-on tie hooks onto the collar, a zipper tie slides up to a ready-made knot, and a self-tie is knotted by hand.

At Gemilang Clip-on, zipper or self-tie; woven or printed; with custom stripes, crest badges and prefect rank markings.

SW·05

Polo collar

BM kolar polo

A polo collar is a soft, turned-down collar with a short buttoned opening at the neck, as on a polo shirt: neater than a round neck and still easy to move in.

At Gemilang One of the two necklines for our house colour T-shirts, and one of the two collars on our koko shirts.

SW·06

Mandarin collar

BM kolar mandarin

A mandarin collar is a short collar that stands up around the neck without folding over, for a clean, upright look.

At Gemilang The other collar on our koko shirts, next to the polo collar.

SW·07

A Muslimah cut is a T-shirt cut for Muslim girls and women: long sleeves and a longer, looser body.

At Gemilang On our size chart, Muslimah runs from XS to 8XL, long sleeve only, measured in inches.

Which school words come up in an order?

The school bodies, school years and attire rules a school-wear order is built around.

SC·01

Uniformed bodies

BM badan beruniform

Uniformed bodies are the school clubs that wear a uniform, such as KRS (Kadet Remaja Sekolah), Pengakap (Scouts), Pandu Puteri (Girl Guides), PBSM (Red Crescent) and Kadet Polis (Police Cadets).

At Gemilang We make koko shirts for them.

SC·02

School crest

BM lencana sekolah

A school crest is the school’s badge: its emblem, often with its name and motto. On school wear it is usually printed or embroidered on the chest.

At Gemilang We embroider crests on koko shirts and add crest badges to ties.

SC·03

PIBG

BM Persatuan Ibu Bapa dan Guru

PIBG is the parent-teacher association of a Malaysian school. PIBG committees often organise sportswear, house T-shirts and other items for pupils.

At Gemilang One of the three kinds of buyer we sell to, with schools and school vendors.

SC·04

School vendor

BM vendor sekolah

A school vendor is a business that supplies uniforms, sportswear and other items to a school’s pupils, often appointed by the school.

At Gemilang Vendors buy direct from our factory, with no middleman mark-up.

SC·05

Standard 1 to Form 6

BM Tahun 1 hingga Tingkatan 6

Standard 1 to Form 6 covers the Malaysian school years: Standard 1 to 6 in primary school, Form 1 to 5 in secondary school, then Form 6 at some secondary schools. Between them, school sizes run from seven-year-olds to Form 6 students.

At Gemilang Our standard school sizes run from Standard 1 to Form 6.

SC·06

MOE colours and cuts

BM warna dan potongan yang mematuhi KPM

MOE colours and cuts refers to the colours and garment shapes that follow the school attire rules of Malaysia’s Ministry of Education (MOE; in Malay, Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia, KPM).

At Gemilang Our own description of our standard school range, not a Ministry approval or certificate.

What do the ordering words mean?

The words that come up between the first WhatsApp message and the finished order. Our guide to ordering custom school track bottoms puts them in sequence.

OR·01

Minimum

MOQ (minimum order quantity)

BM tempahan minimum

MOQ, the minimum order quantity, is the smallest number of pieces a factory will make of one design. Below it, setting up the pattern, cutting and printing for one design costs more than the order is worth.

At Gemilang Gemilang Apparel’s minimum is 30–50 pieces per design (bagi setiap reka bentuk); we confirm the exact figure for your order.

Ordering custom track bottoms, step by step

  1. OR·02

    Digital mockup

    BM mockup digital

A digital mockup is a picture of the finished garment made on a computer, with your colours, logo and options on it, so the school can agree on the look before anything is cut.

At Gemilang Gemilang Apparel’s digital mockup is free: the first thing we send back after your brief, with a fabric recommendation for your budget.

  2. OR·03

    Physical sample

    BM sampel fizikal

A physical sample is one real garment made before the bulk order, so you can check the fabric, the fit, the colours and the logo in your hands and on a pupil.

At Gemilang Gemilang Apparel makes the sample after the free mockup, and mass production waits until you approve it.

  3. OR·04

    Mass production

    BM pengeluaran pukal

Mass production is making the full order once the sample is approved: every size, in the agreed fabric, colours and logo.
