School Trousers in Malaysia (Seluar Sekolah): Colours, Rules and Ordering

In Malaysian government schools, boys wear navy blue trousers, long or short, at primary level and olive green long trousers at secondary level. The uniform is set nationally, so the school badge is what tells one school's uniform from another. A school or vendor ordering trousers in bulk should name the colour, fabric, cut and waist sizes in writing, then approve a sample pair first.

Boys’ school trousers — seluar sekolah — follow colours set nationally, not by each school. This guide is for schools, PIBG committees and uniform vendors who buy them in bulk: what the national colours are, who sets the rules, what may change in 2027, and what to put in a trouser order.

The short version

  • Primary boys: navy blue trousers, long or short. Secondary boys: olive green long trousers.
  • The colours are national. The school badge, not the trousers, is what differs between government schools.
  • 2027 is not settled. A decision on aligning school uniforms was reported as due by August 2026; as of 22 October 2026 we have found none.
  • Uniform days and sports days are separate. For 2024/2025 the Ministry set two uniform days, two sports-attire days and one co-curricular day a week.
  • Order in writing, then approve a sample. Colour, fabric, cut and waist sizes on the quote; one sample pair before mass production.

What colour are school trousers in Malaysia?

Boys' school trousers in Malaysian government schools are navy blue at primary level, worn long or short, and olive green at secondary level, worn long. These colours belong to the national uniform rather than to any one school, so the same colour applies across government schools at each level; the school badge is what changes.

Secondary schoolOlive green, longAny special uniform for prefects or monitors

The Wikipedia summary of Malaysian school uniforms lists “Navy blue long trousers or Navy blue short trousers” for primary boys and “Olive green long trousers” for secondary boys. In Malay, buyers ask for seluar biru tua for primary school and seluar panjang hijau zaitun (olive green long trousers) for secondary school. In the national uniform described there, trousers are the boys’ garment: girls wear a navy blue (primary) or turquoise (secondary) pinafore or long skirt, or a white baju kurung.

Colour names are easy to get wrong. “Olive green” and “navy blue” cover a range of shades, so the safest brief names the colour and sends a photo of a pair the school already accepts, taken in daylight.

Who sets the rules for school trousers: the Ministry or the school?

The trouser colours belong to the national uniform, and each school applies the rules. According to Wikipedia’s summary, Malaysian school uniforms have been compulsory nationwide since 1970 and are almost completely standardised, with the school badge as the main difference. Each school still designs its own sports uniform and may set special uniforms for prefects, class monitors and librarians.

Uniform rules are enforced: students who do not comply “may be warned, given demerit points” or sent home, the same summary notes.

One national change has already reached every uniform: since 21 April 2025, school uniforms in government schools carry the national flag as a badge on the right chest. It sits on the shirt, not the trousers, but it is a reminder that national uniform rules do change, and that a vendor’s stock has to follow them.

Will school trouser colours change in 2027?

Whether school trouser colours change in 2027 has not been announced. In January 2026 the Director-General of Education, Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad, said a final decision on standardising school uniforms would be announced by August 2026, with phased implementation from 2027 starting with Year One and Form One. That date has passed; as of 22 October 2026 we have found no announcement.

The aim, as Malay Mail reported on 2 January 2026, citing Utusan Malaysia, is fewer colours:

“I think school uniforms with too many colours do not encourage us to instil a spirit of unity in our children.” — Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad, Director-General of Education

A day later, Malay Mail reported his statement that the proposal was still under study and not finalised, that there would be no change to student uniforms for the 2026 academic year, and that the Ministry would communicate any decision in advance to parents and all relevant stakeholders.

The reports are about the many colours schools add to the uniform: he said some schools require uniforms involving more than seven colours, along with several T-shirts for different activities and extras such as blazers and vests. Because the reported phasing starts with Year One and Form One, stock for the new intake is the stock most exposed to any change; for a vendor, the practical step is to confirm the colour with each school before stocking for the 2027 intake, and not to guess.

Trousers or track bottoms: which does a school need?

Trousers and track bottoms are bought for different days. Trousers are part of the national school uniform, while each school designs its own sports uniform, which, Wikipedia notes, usually carries an abbreviation of the school’s name on the pants. For the 2024/2025 session the Ministry set a week of two days in school uniform, two days in sports attire and one day in co-curricular attire, with schools free to choose which days are which.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced that pattern on 19 January 2024, RTM reported, with easing the burden on parents as the reason; it is the latest weekly pattern we have found. The difference matters when ordering: trouser colours follow the national uniform, while a school’s sports wear follows its own design. Our school track bottoms buying guide covers the sports side.

What should a school or vendor put in a trouser order?

A school or vendor should put five things in writing before a trouser order is quoted: the colour and level, the fabric and its weight, the cut the school accepts, the waist sizes by class, and the quantity per design with a target date. Written down, those five let two quotes be compared on the same terms and give the sample something to be checked against.

  1. Colour and level. Navy blue for primary or olive green for secondary, with a photo of an accepted pair.
  2. Fabric. Ask for the fabric name and its weight on the quote, so two quotes compare like with like (the same logic as our guide to track bottom fabric).
  3. Cut. Straight or slimmer, long or short for primary, as the school’s own rules allow.
  4. Sizes by class. Collect waist and length sizes class by class, from Standard 1 to Form 6, rather than guessing a spread.
  5. Quantity and date. A rough quantity per design and the date the trousers are needed.

Sizes are easy to leave to the end. A short form sent home through each class teacher, asking for waist and length, gives a factory a real size spread to cut against; our guide to ordering custom school track bottoms walks through the same steps for sportswear, and all Gemilang Apparel school wear guides are on one page.

What should you check on a sample pair of school trousers?

On a sample pair of school trousers, check the colour against an accepted pair in daylight, the waist and length on a student of that size, the zip and the waistband, the seams at the crotch, and what one home wash changes. The sample is the last point where a school can change the specification before every pair is cut.

Colour first: hold the sample beside a pair the school already accepts, outdoors, because shop lighting hides the difference between two olive greens. Then try the sample on a student, sitting and standing, since a waist that fits standing can dig in at a desk. Work the zip several times, pull at the waistband and the belt loops, and look along the inside seams. Finally wash it the way a parent will and measure it again.
